Something in the Air

Tis the season for lots of red and hearts in retail. Advertising in particular really overdoes the holidays, to the point where many have no desire at all to do anything for the holiday. Of course, many hold that if Valentine's day is the only romantic day of the year, then someone has their priorities wrong. That often sparks debates on emotional labor and context too.

Everything is bigger in Second Life, including the number of hearts showing up everywhere. Most clubs elect to go with it, though a small number go anti-Valentine with zombie and black themes. Stores put all the red things on sale. Sims make suggestions for romantic dates. It's odd to look at when not in a committed relationship, and pressure ridden in one. It comes down to when is a virtual date day is not a date, but a formula.

The Power of Timing

Timing is everything, at least for a good many things. Time a phrase wrong, and people think you're weird. Time an announcement wrong, and the whole thing goes downhill. Time a photo wrong, and it comes out to a blur. Time things right though, and no one notices.

In Second Life, timing makes all the difference too. From pictures where the lighting isn't just right to working in clubs with strict time constraints on notices, people take note. Then there's the stuff with people. Breakups are a particular subject where timing makes the difference between being cast out of a group of friends wholly and keeping the relationships that matter.

Light and Life

There's a precedent for wishing people good life and light, positive things that help later. There's more to it of course, and there's a certain amount of competition among humans. On the whole, humanity wishes other humans well even in the parting of ways though.

This differs in virtual worlds a bit. Since there's anonymity, people tend to polarize. There's the people who just lose touch, the folks who come to mutual agreements, and the folks who are outright hostile about it. While there's more of the first, and definitely some of the second, it's the third type that make people want to quit permanently. The pain would be less with a little more light and life.

Over the Moon

It's the first full moon of the new year. Two weeks in is when people start rethinking their resolutions, and picking new ones. Of course, the full moon has other connotations. Magick tends to associate it with cleansing. Pop culture tends to believe that the full moon drives people crazy and causes a violent crime spike. Though in honesty, it's more or less just pretty to look at.

Second Life is programmed with as many moons as the user desires. With windlight settings, there's an almost infinite combination of moon rises to watch and play under. Add in some creative builders, and it might even come out romantic.
