Memorial Days

Memorial days are necessary for a variety of reasons, though most of them revolve around people understanding what the memorial day is for. It's reaching the point where Memorial Day in the US is more about marking the start of summer than the reason it was designated a holiday. That is difficult to watch having grown up around the culture Memorial Day is for to see so many forget sacrifice.

A Word on Viewers

Second Life is somewhat unique in its approach to third party viewers in that it releases code to a degree. There are a whole mess of viewers designed for a variety of different systems, everything from things for specific to mac to ones for cell phones. I've played with a few over the years depending on what I needed.

I generally favor my Firestorm on my computer, rather than the official viewer. It's not as cutting edge, but it certainly has more options for customization. I've done Singularity and Catznip too, with different circumstances going. Singularity worked on my dying computer better, while Catznip was pretty good overall when I was on a stable version.

I do have a viewer for my phone, since life is weird and crazy at times. Since I use an android, that means I was able to get Lumiya going. While most of the other apps are text only, Lumiya actually renders the SL world well enough for someone to hit a poseball or wander around. It sucks battery pretty fast though.

Mesh Bodies

Mesh bodies came into SL with the advent of rigged mesh. The first ones were very, very awkward, but as mesh took over, they became the 'better' way. Of course, once there was more than one option, mesh body addicts divided into camps claiming that theirs was the best, the easiest, the most user friendly, etc. Then we get into appliers and mesh heads, but those are another subject entirely.

I ended up going to a mesh body several months back (I know, long time to catch up). In the intervening time, my outfit selection reduced by a little under half due to incompatibilities. I've also only occasionally missed the layer alphas and cursed rigging outright. I haven't noticed any real difference in the lag and load times, and the huds usually work well enough. Of course, I'm sure we'll keep seeing more 'real to life' models emerge as we go, and the default body in SL is improving as well.

Just Hangin'

The fun part (read heavy sarcasm) about how my real life organizes itself is the relative isolation it places me in during my time off on account of that schedule. One of the good things about SL is that it's always available, and the people in it are known to keep odd hours too. Of course, there are times when even second life slows down.

So the wee hours of the morning are usually spent talking to a person or two, usually while working on other projects. That ranges from organizing a hunt addicts' inventory to working on my inventory to doing a bit of photography. It's always the people who make the hours memorable even around the other things to do, even when we're not sharing sim space.

On Being Green

I only recently started wearing a green skin in SL, courtesy of wandering the Fantasy Faire. It's not quite as drastic as swapping into another species, at least not in the visual way being a mermaid is. It doesn't require me to reconfigure my wardrobe, like being an active vampire would. It's still a change though, and it's amusing when I tell someone 'I'm green'.

Technology

Technology is a lovely thing. The virtual world I spend time in is an example of the principle. It's so easy to be someone different, or deeper, or to explore some facet that it's not feasible to elsewhere. Some facets are not suitable for conservative environments, or are too new for the person to feel comfortable expressing. I've found those are the ones more commonly expressed in SL, rather than just extending the same person from real life.

Technology also connects us to people. Populations are no longer limited to a particular piece of land for their friends. Being part of second life has meant that I made friends around the globe, indeed some of them among my best friends.

Of course, the anonymity of the net can lead people to some dark places and darker actions. The bullies and the trolls, as it were, are persistent. There's also the emotional abusers and the narcissists, but the other benefit of technology is it usually has a block function to remove the issues once they're recognized.

Staff families

Yesterday was a fun day, I got to see a group of people, some of whom have known me quite a while, but that I haven't seen recently. I knew where they'd gone after the last place we'd worked together closed down, but real life changed and it took me a while to get back into being, well, me.

Part of what I do with my SL is host for DJs in clubs, usually 2 hour sets. I find it fun, entertaining, and a good way to finance my other SL pursuits. I also find it a good way to meet people. I usually opt to host at smaller clubs, because I don't just want to sit there for a couple hours saying hello as people come in and gesturing the advertisements. Small clubs also let you get to know people, whether its the other staff or the VIPs. So I've opted to rejoin my staff family in their new home at the Zocalo after a fun audition yesterday, with a regular set and everything. It's gonna be crazy and fun all over again XD

Just a little Twisted

So, twice a year The Twisted Hunt is put on, much to the delight and swearing of hunters all over the grid. Usually the prizes are worth the swearing. The next hunt is a couple months off, so there's still time to build fortitude for the attempt if it sounds appealing.

Things in SL can do many things, good, bad, or otherwise. It's very much a make of it what you will world, though some people take it to extremes. To look at some parts of SL is to look at the dark parts of the human experience. Yet other parts are a reflection of all the goodness. Most parts are a fair mix of the two, all twisted into one. That's what makes it such a world.

Wandering

Sometimes, I decide that I need a wander outside of where I normally go in SL. I like my normal spots of course, but there are many places that I would never see if I never typed random words into the search box.

In this case, I looked for somewhere pretty and rustic to suit my mood. This is just one sim I visited over the night. There is peace in beauty, and beauty in peace, especially when it's solitary.

There are so many sims around SL that a lot of people put hours into that really are breathtaking, it's a matter of finding them, being willing to jump out of the comfort zone of the familiar clubs and clans and homes.
